Why is my wood burning stove not burning as well as it used to?

Usually, when your logburner or multi fuel stoves aren`t burning wood or coal as well as they used to burn, and this is not caused simply by a change in the weather altering external air or wind pressure, this is an indication that you are over due a chimney sweep.

Where you have a wood burning stove or multi burner or, indeed, any type of solid fuel or wood fire, the chimney and stoves flue pipe must be swept regularly to remove all soot deposits and prevent blockage.

We recommend that this should be done at least twice a year, preferably in early autumn, prior to the winter wood burning season to check that the chimney flue has not been blocked by bird's nests for example, and we recommend the chimney to be swept again at the end of the heating season to prevent soot deposits from resting in the chimney during the dormant period. At Country Kiln we tend to have our chimney pipes cleaned and chimneys swept in July and January as that seems to be the time the chimney sweeps are less busy, sometimes we sweep more often than twice a year.

The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps recommends that chimneys used in conjunction with wood fuel or wood stoves should be swept quarterly when in use.

Burning wet wood increases the amount of soot in a chimney and with it the chance of a chimney fire. Logs should always be seasoned (air-dried) for at least a year before being burned.

At Country Kiln we recommend chimney sweeping regularly as a preventative measure. i.e. we recommend the chimneys used for wood burning stoves, log burners and multi fuel stoves are swept before they show signs of requiring sweeping.

Another indication a chimney is badly in need of cleaning is when soot falls on the register plate.

At Country Kiln we recommend engaging the services of a professional chimney sweep or stoves installer to sweep your chimney. There are several reasons for this: chimneys can breach during sweeping, for instance brick work can dislodge blocking your wood burning stoves chimney, in the case where there are two parrallel chimneys in one stack bricks disloging can block one or other of chimney flues possibly without the knowledge of the non professional sweep.

Sweeping a chimney can be quite a messy job. Soot bursts can occur during a chimney being swept. This can result in quite a mess. Professional chimney sweeps are clean workers. It is far more cost effective to engage the services of a professional chimney sweep than to redecorate your full room. A professional chimney sweep is usually in the region of £50 to £75 and remember a chimney sweep carries good luck, especially if you blow him a kiss.
